What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is used in Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and recently in the United States to gain entry into university studies, trainings and also for immigration/resident applications.
For whom is the Test Designed?
The test is designed to assess the English language skills of non-English speaking students seeking to study in an English speaking country.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) superseded the English Language Testing System (ELTS) in 1990. IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia. What is the Mode of Exam ?
The IETLS is a paper-pencil based test.
I don't understand why there are two tests?
There is an Academic and General Training IELTS test. Both Academic and General IELTS have the same speaking and listening sub-tests, however the reading and writing tests are different.
For study purposes, most institutions (eg; university) require an Academic IELTS score (usually 6.0 or 6.5). For Australian immigration applications, the General IELTS test is required, generally with an overall score around 5.5.
What is the duration of the IELTS test?
In total the test takes 2 hours and 44 minutes. Listening = 30 minutes, Reading = 60 minutes, Writing = 60 minutes, Speaking = 11-14 minutes.
What level of English do I need to take the IELTS Test?
IELTS tests are designed to assess candidates' level from beginner through to advanced. However, the test itself is aimed at candidates with an Intermediate and above level.
Is there a difference between an Academic and a General Training score?
Yes. The Academic module is required for entrance into undergraduate or postgraduate studies or to assess English ability for study or work where English is the language of communication. General Training is generally needed for immigration purposes or to assess English ability for completion of secondary schooling or training programs not at university degree level (Australia, Canada, New Zealand).
Can IELTS be taken as an alternative to TOEFL?
Yes, over 544 US institutions recognize IELTS and accept either IELTS or TOEFL for admission to award courses.
How long is the test score valid?
IELTS test results are valid for two years from the test date
Do I have to study an English language course before I take IELTS?

The best way to prepare for the test is to do as many different activities in English as possible. Of course, you need to do specific IELTS study, but there are many other useful things you can do to help prepare. For example:

Under usual test circumstances, the candidates will receive their Test Report Forms approximately two weeks after they complete their test.
How often can I take the test?
The new rule is that you can take the IELTS test as many times as you like, whenever you like - (previously candidates had to wait 3 months before re-taking the test). However, keep in mind that it takes time to improve the English skills required in the test. Research indicates it takes around 3 months study to improve your score by one band point.
