What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System.  It is used in Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and recently in the United States  to gain entry into university studies, trainings and also for immigration/resident applications.

For whom is the Test Designed?

The test is designed to assess the English language skills of non-English speaking students seeking to study in an English speaking country.

Who conducts the test?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) superseded the English Language Testing System (ELTS) in 1990. IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia. The IELTS test is conducted by the following educational bodies in partnership:

What is the Mode of Exam ?

The IETLS is a paper-pencil based test.

I don't understand why there are two tests?

There is an Academic and General Training IELTS test.  Both Academic and General IELTS have the same speaking and listening sub-tests, however the reading and writing tests are different.

For study purposes, most institutions (eg; university) require an Academic IELTS score (usually 6.0 or 6.5).  For Australian immigration applications, the General IELTS test is required, generally with an overall score around 5.5.

What is the duration of the IELTS test?

In total the test takes 2 hours and 44 minutes. Listening = 30 minutes, Reading = 60 minutes, Writing = 60 minutes, Speaking = 11-14 minutes.

What level of English do I need to take the IELTS Test?

IELTS tests are designed to assess candidates' level from beginner through to advanced. However, the test itself is aimed at candidates with an Intermediate and above level.

Is there a difference between an Academic and a General Training score?

Yes. The Academic module is required for entrance into undergraduate or postgraduate studies or to assess English ability for study or work where English is the language of communication. General Training is generally needed for immigration purposes or to assess English ability for completion of secondary schooling or training programs not at university degree level (Australia, Canada, New Zealand).

Can IELTS be taken as an alternative to TOEFL?

Yes, over 544 US institutions recognize IELTS and accept either IELTS or TOEFL for admission to award courses.

How long is the test score valid?

IELTS test results are valid for two years from the test date

Do I have to study an English language course before I take IELTS?

Yes, if you do not have basic English language skill.Focus offers varieties of Pre-IELTS preparation classes which are very helpful for you to improve your basic English skills.

  • Listening to the radio- especially news programs or discussions, will help with your listening and knowledge of current affairs, as will watching the news on television.
  • Reading educational articles in newspapers and magazines or leaflets will improve your vocabulary, grammar and knowledge of topics.
  • Become aware of social issues and common topics of debate.
  • Take every opportunity to talk about yourself and share your opinions with a variety of people, and listen to what they have to say too.

ANY extra English study or practice you do will help you in the IELTS test!

When will the candidate receive their results?

Under usual test circumstances, the candidates will receive their Test Report Forms approximately two weeks after they complete their test.

How often can I take the test?

The new rule is that you can take the IELTS test as many times as you like, whenever you like - (previously candidates had to wait 3 months before re-taking the test).  However, keep in mind that it takes time to improve the English skills required in the test.  Research indicates it takes around 3 months study to improve your score by one band point.
